Kicking Bear is a nation wide mentoring program which introduces disadvantaged children to the great outdoors. While Kicking Bear has helped thousands of children all over the country, we don't forget our local community and we are very active in it. Kicking Bear enjoys participating in activities that other charities organize. By doing this, we are able to indirectly help more children as these organizations help children that may not have the opportunity to participate in a Kicking Bear event. Another added benefit of showing up at these events is that we are able to find more mentors to help out at our events. Our team has a lot of energy and we would love to see at these events with us!!!

On Saturday, May 17, 2008 the Winona, MN Wal-Mart store co-hosted a Camping/Water Safety Event in conjunction with the Lewiston Sportsman's Club and Kicking Bear.  The day's program included exhibits, static displays, and demonstrations.  The event was supported by the store's management team, Safety Team, and Community Involvement Committee as well as local groups and businesses.  These included Coca Cola, Winona Radio, We-No-Nah Canoe, Winona Daily Newspaper, Winona Post, and the Minnesota DNR.

The camping safety topics were addressed by members of the Lewiston Sportsmen's Club while the water/boat safety topics were conducted by members of the Winona Sheriff's Dept. and the Winona US Coast Guard Auxiliary.

A fund-raising cookout took place during the day to help raise funds for the Lewiston Sportsmen's Club Kicking Bear Campout and 3-D Archery Shoot which will be held on July 11^th and 12^th.  

The vision is that this event will become an annual event that brings the store and the community together to present activities that promote summer safety topics to the people of the Winona area.

The objectives are that the store is committed to Community Involvement by actively working with various local groups and businesses; in conjunction with the Lewiston Sportsmen's Club, promote camping and water safety; and get the area's youth involved in outdoor activities through the Kicking Bear Program.
