    Recent Kicking Bear Event Reports

From the Heart by "The Cameraman" Mike Langrehr

With only minutes left of shooting time the buck of a lifetime for 15 year old Dylan Steers stood 130 yards away, facing right at us. Everyone in the blind was deathly silent. Dylan had the crosshairs on the buck but had no shot until he turned broad side. For a full 3 minutes the deer stood motionless, his attention on something beyond our blind. With closing time getting close time was running out. As a distant shot rang up though the valley the buck's casual posture changed suddenly and in a heartbeat he turned to leave. With perfect timing Dylan's mentor, Matt Berg, bleated at the disappearing dream and brought him to a standstill. As he quartered towards us slightly I heard Matt whisper in Dylan's ear, "Put the crosshairs right on the top of his shoulder and squeeze slowly."

Turkey Time by Mike Ray

Hunting wild turkeys has been a passion of mine for quite some time. It gets stronger every year. I have been fortunate enough to harvest several turkeys throughout my hunting career. For the past two years I have laid my shotgun down. With bow in hand I am determined to conquer the quest of taking all four turkey species within the United States. I have accomplished half of this challenge. During this time, I have taken many turkeys, among them were two Easterns and two Rio's.

As an avid outdoorsman, with a keen interest in our youth, I have also devoted some time to hunt with a 12-year-old boy from our area, Guner Booth. When I invited him to hunt with me, he was so excited! As usual the turkeys were very tough to hunt. In an attempt to pattern them, we were very mobile for the first part of the hunt. The terrain was almost as challenging as the turkeys.

Tyler Shochey's First Deer

Do you remember your first deer? I do, and many times I've reflected back and told the story that took place 30-some years ago. The doe wouldn't find its place in the record books, but the memory is as clear today as it was that crisp November day of my youth.

Often times, when we recall our hunting exploits, we may downplay the importance of our first deer. The little buck or doe that fell to the first well-placed shot of our hunting career. Although the rack might not compare to the future deer we will brag about, the first deer will always be truly special in our lives as our initiation as deer hunters. This past weekend I had the pleasure of sharing with Tyler Shockey his induction into the ranks of deer hunters.

Memoirs of My Bear Hunts by Ray Howell

After turning 18 years old, bowhunting was one of the main focuses of my life besides my family. I had harvested my first whitetail at the age of 19. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to take a large bear with my bow.

Back then, you could get a deer license and that also included a bear tag and small game license. I had gotten together with a couple of friends of mine and we had gone to Glidden, WI and put out baits once a week for several weeks before the bear season opened. None of us really knew what we were doing. All I knew

FEATURE KICKING BEAR ADVENTURES

-Kicking Bear-Changing Lives One Mentor At A Time
By Deb Luzinski

It was my first Kicking Bear Campout and Shoot. I had been making a very half-baked attempt at helping to "host" this camp. On the other hand, Travis "TJ" Johnson, his wife Jen, and Frank Welch were the ones who actually did all the prep work. Members of the Chisago City fire department volunteered their time and talents in preparing for this first-of-a-kind event in their area. "TJ" is a mountain of a man with a big heart for kids.

Others who came to help were Myles Keller from Mantorville, MN, Scott Swanson from Cannon Falls, MN, and Jerry Helget from the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area. Myles is the most well-known bowhunter in the world and

-Tyus' First Turkey Hunt

The Kansas youth turkey season was a blast! Kurt Nunnenkamp from Paradise Adventures invited me to bring a youth to hunt on his property near Altoona , KS in April 2006.

One of the young boys I brought with me has been to several Kicking Bear Campouts and Shoots but has never had the opportunity to hunt. After the long drive to Kansas Tyus was quite excited to meet Kurt and to see where we would be hunting. They have a great bunkhouse with lots of rooms so everyone could have their own room.

The first thing we did after unpacking was to set up the target and see how the old single shot 20 gauge patterned on the turkey's neck. We put the target up at 25 yards. Then Tyus got into a comfortable sitting position and the last thing he asked me before he squeezed the trigger was, Is this thing going to hurt when I shoot? I told him, No, just a little kick keep your bead on the turkey's neck. Tyus squeezed off his first round and

-Antler Adventure

On Saturday, March 25, 2006, I attended the second annual Kicking Bear antler hunt in Holmen Wisconsin. With me I brought two of my daughters, Heather who is twelve, and Arianna who is seven. The original plan was to invite one friend for each girl, but none of Heather's friends could make it. Arianna had invited her friend Lilly, and since Lilly is a twin, her mother asked if it was alright if her sister Violet also came along(the twins do everything together). I said no problem and picked the girls up early Saturday morning.

-My First 10 Pointer by Cathryn Helmers

It all started in AuCathryn Helmers and her Buckgust when my Dad came home from our land one day with a picture of a 10 point buck in velvet from our cuddeback digital game camera; right from that very moment I knew thats the buck I wanted to harvest. My Dad then said, Easier said then done kiddo. So the season started in mid September and my Dad had seen this 10 pointer many times. Finally it was the beginning of November and my Dad wanted me to sit in one of our box stands that sits 100 yards or so in the woods; away from the larger Big Rack Trophy Fall/Winter food plot. I was so thrilled to go sit alone and try and kill a buck all on my own, so there I was walking into my stand in November. This was probably one of the most exciting days of my life. Taking Time
By Mike Ray

I love to see kids in the outdoors having good clean fun, whether it's hunting critters or pulling a big fish.  I take kids in the outdoors every year and I have a lot of fun sharing the experience with them. I think I get even more excited watching them than when it's happening to me.

I have been taking this 11 year old boy out hunting for the last couple years.  His name is Gunner Booth, and we have been having a great time together. Gunner has never taken an animal with a gun or a bow, and I was ready to make it happen for this young man. The first year that I had taken him hunting, we had several close calls, but no luck.  We never gave up, and never will. This year was a little different.  We hunted very hard, I dedicated one whole weekend, morning and evening.
